Curriculum Drivers

BUILDING COMMUNITY

Knowing what it means to be part of a global community and a responsible global citizens who works for the good of their community, is something of great importance to us at St Stephens Community Academy. Whilst with us, we strive to ensure that our children acquire a depth of knowledge about the world in which they live. Through this we want our pupils to build positive understanding of other children in the UK, Europe and from across the wider world. Through our curriculum offer and UNICEF Rights work our children have established links with the other parts of the world in order to see beyond the borders of North Cornwall. We are particularly proud of our recent humanitarian work linked to Ukraine . We have also developed some musical links with South Africa and Uganda via the Cornwall Music Hub opportunities.

BUILDING FUTURES

FUTURE PROOFING

As a forward thinking school we work hard to ensure our children grow up knowing about the world around them. Our curriculum is planned to provide our children with a wealth of first hand experiences which have been devised to expand their horizons and increase their aspirations for the future. Along with this our pupils learn how to keep themselves healthy and safe. In order to achieve these things we do the following things:

  • Offer trips and invite visitors/experts in to broaden the pupils understanding of the world in which they live.

  • Offer year group residential visits to develop the understanding of themselves and their place in the UK.

  • Health and Safety talks and first aid training.

  • Offer a fully comprehensive PSHE curriculum

  • A comprehensive transition programme at the end of KS2

  • Children are also taught to understand and manage risk through our personal, social, health  (PSHE) education and Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) programmes.

BUILDING SELF ESTEEM

SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL WELLBEING

At St Stephens Community Academy we feel it is very important for all of our children to feel safe, happy and emotionally secure. Children’s mental health and wellbeing is at the forefront of our thinking and we recognise that it is our responsibility to ensure we promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school. Through our broad and balanced curriculum we promote British values and prepare our children for the future. In order to achieve high standards within this area we have implemented the following things:

  • High standards for pupil safeguarding.

We recognise our moral and statutory responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of all pupils. We endeavour to provide a safe and welcoming environment where children are respected and valued. We are alert to the signs of abuse and neglect and follow our procedures to ensure that children receive effective support, protection and justice.

  • Comprehensive PSHE Curriculum

We have implemented a comprehensive PSHE Education programme called SCARF. The scheme brings together PSHE Education, emotional literacy, mindfulness, social skills and spiritual development. A variety of teaching strategies are used and are mindful of each child's preferred learning style. The scheme has been designed as a whole school approach with all years working on the same theme at the same time.
