PE/Health

We are delighted to announce that we, St Stephens Community Academy, have achieved the School Games GOLD Mark Award for the 2023/24 academic year.

The School Games Mark is a Government-led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community, and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success.

With a high percentage of young people competing in local inter-school competitions this year, we are extremely proud of our pupils for their dedication to all aspects of school sport, including those young volunteers, leaders and officials who made our competitions possible.

As part of our application, we were asked to fulfil criteria in the areas of participation, competition, workforce and clubs, and we are pleased that the hard work of everyone at our school has been rewarded this year. We are incredibly proud to know that we have offered over 60 clubs for our pupils this year to enrich their physical literacy, well-being and mental health alongside team sports and individual pathways for success.

A special thanks to our amazing community and curriculum support from Arena Sports, Plymouth Argyle, Brendon Worth Cricket and of course our fantastic staff team here for their enthusiasm and drive to offer excellent sport opportunities.

We look forward to applying once again in 2025!

The impact of the sports premium money will have a long lasting effect and impact on St Stephens Community Academy. The use of the money to hire sports coaches in football, gymnastics, athletics and cricket has had a huge impact to date on staff confidence and capabilities to teach a variety of high quality PE across the school. We intend on continuing to build on this CPD to enhance and enable all teaching staff to deliver high quality PE. The use of the money to date has had a great impact on the sustainability of high quality PE and will continue to improve PE for all our pupils  - currently and in the future.

There is always a lot of sport and opportunities for PE at St Stephens. This year we have additional coaches working with us; this includes Plymouth Argyle Football Club coaches for all classes over the year and Bikeability for year 6. Each class from Year 1 to Year 6 will swim for a five week block of hour long lessons.. In the Summer term we will have additional coaches and opportunities for cricket and athletics.

There are a variety of sports clubs running on a weekly basis which include:

Year 5/6 football, Year 3/4 football, Y5/6 netball, KS1 multiskills, running club, athletics, creative arts and Plymouth Argyle KS1 & KS2 clubs for football and cricket.

There will also be opportunities for children to participate in various festivals and events at Launceston College, including multi-skills, badminton, orienteering, volleyball, gymnastics, dance, netball and hockey.

The children from Year 1-Year 6 are also taking part in a daily Wake and Shake session at the start of everyday to wake us up and get us ready for the day of learning ahead.

Once again Launceston College Y11 PE students will be running a competitive afternoon for all children in KS2 later in the year. We will then use a similar format for our Y6 leaders to provide a competitive event for all the children in KS1.

We will have school football, netball, tag rugby, hockey, cricket, cross country, multi skills and athletics teams this year which will compete in a range of inter school events.

To see what we have been up to have a look at the news feed on the home page, with further photos on the class blogs.
