Investigating materials in science

Our KS1 scientists had a fantastic time exploring the properties of materials during this week's science lesson.

We started by learning some super scientific vocabulary, including bend, stretch, squash, twist, flexible, and rigid. The children discussed different materials and made predictions about which objects might bend, stretch or squash.

To put our learning into action, we headed outside for an exciting investigation. The challenge was simple: Who could find the bendiest stick? The children explored the outdoor area carefully, collecting sticks and testing how flexible they were. They compared, observed and discussed their findings using their new scientific vocabulary.

It was wonderful to see such great collaboration between pupils. The children worked together brilliantly, sharing ideas, comparing sticks and helping each other draw conclusions. There was lots of discussion as they explained why some sticks were more flexible and why others snapped rather than bent.

The investigation was filled with curiosity, laughter and discovery. The children loved testing their sticks and were eager to explain their scientific thinking to their friends. We were especially impressed by how confidently they used words such as flexible, rigid, material and properties throughout the lesson.

We finished by sharing our findings and identifying the bendiest sticks we had discovered. The children demonstrated excellent observation skills and showed a growing understanding that different materials have different properties.
