Learning about money through games - Year 2

Year 2 have been consolidating their learning in our maths unit on money.  After several lessons exploring coins, notes, and their values, the children took part in a fun and practical session applying their knowledge through games.

What have we been learning? The children have been learning to recognise and name coins and notes, understanding the values of different coins.  They have counted money to make different amounts, as well as comparing the amounts using language such as greater than, less than and equal to; found different ways to make the same amount and found change. These skills are important life skills, and we will revisit our money theme during Number Day when we will include financial literacy during the activities.

The games included money matching, toy shop role play and a coin collector board game. These activities encouraged discussion, reasoning and problem solving, while also building confidence with money.  We noticed that they supported each other by explaining their thinking, showed improved accuracy when counting money and above all enjoyed learning in a hands-on, practical way.
