Little box of books

8th December 2020

We are absolutely delighted to be one of 100 schools and nurseries in the UK that have received 100 books for our library from the #ChangetheStory campaign, fronted by TV personality and singer Rochelle Humes in the Summer.

The campaign run by children’s book company Little Box of Books and supported by KPMG raised more than £57,000 to get 10,000 inclusive books into school libraries all over the UK and was designed to help more children see themselves in the books they read and help all children to better understand the world and their place in it.

The books from the Change the Story campaign are crucial to teaching children about the world and now we have books in our school whose characters reflect the population of the UK. These stories will teach the children that we’re all different and will expand their ideas of normal. These will give children a brilliant foundation in understanding, accepting, and celebrating diversity.

Boxes of books have been delivered to nursery and schools in the most and least ethnically diverse parts of the UK and to areas that have reported high incidences of hate crimes and with information from recent local elections, as part of Little Box of Books’ mission to diversify family and school bookshelves.

Lynsey Pollard founder and owner of Little Box of Books said,

“Diverse bookshelves teach children from an early age that everybody is equally important, and everybody matters. We can’t teach lessons on being anti-racist and to accept difference and then send children to bookshelves that don’t tell them that everybody is equally important. Little Box of Books hopes the children at St Stephens Community Academy will see black main characters, blended families, characters with disabilities in their stories, helping them realise that everybody is worthy of a story.”
