Physiotherapists Inspire Children with Career Choice

17th March 2023

Physiotherapists Visit Inspires Children.
As part of British Science Week we were delighted to welcome Richard Howlett, one of our parents, and his colleague into school to visit children across the year groups. Both work for the Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. They firstly explained how their job is linked to science and what job opportunities arise in this profession. We asked a lot of questions to find out how long it takes to become qualified: 3 years at University; A levels needed: biology and another science; inspirations for choosing this career: inspired by physios who had helped their family and to look after own body as a result of playing sports.
We learnt that there are 206 bones in an adult body with approximately 600 muscles : you have to know A LOT in order to be a physiotherapist! We were successful in matching the bones to the correct part of the skeleton and learnt some Latin names for them eg radius and tibia.
Finally, we learnt that the best way to treat an injury is to move the bones and muscles until they are tired- the press up challenge was VERY tiring!
A HUGE thank you to you both for your time and fantastic interactive presentations-we know you have inspired a lot of children to consider this career pathway in the future.
