Science - Forces

Forces and Magnets

We spent the first lesson in this unit exploring and noticing that some forces need contact between two objects. We spent time observing different forces and worked scientifically to group and classify different forces based on observations and scientific knowledge. We did this by using a force meter, to measure in Newtons, how much force is needed to pull a toy car across different surfaces in the environment.

In the next lesson we compared how things move on different surfaces. We evaluated our choices and suggested further improvements. We undertook a more formal experiment into how much force is needed to pull the toys cars on varying surfaces and recorded our results in tables.
For our third lesson in the unit we compared and grouped together a variety of everyday materials on the basis of whether they are attracted to a magnet and identified some magnetic materials. For this lesson our working scientifically focus was to predict whether materials are magnetic or not.
