NSPCC Number Day - Maths in the wider world.

Wow, what an interesting array of occupations we had represented today in Year 6, demonstrating how important maths is in the wider world. Through our research and discussions, we noticed that 'measure' was the most common theme through our occupations. These included; CEO of a business, Interior Designer, Doctors, Scientists, Paleontologists, Chefs, Soldiers, Accountants, Farmers and plenty of maths teachers! We also discussed how coding relied on algorithms and was important to a  Programme Designer role and this linked to the study of our famous Mathematician: Alan Turing, WW2 Code Breaker.
A variety of maths related vocabulary was also discussed: budgeting, tax returns,  profit and loss, proportions, ratio, quantities, area, co-ordinates ( for identifying position and navigational purposes, and temperature.
We later went on to learn about Fibonacci and his series of numbers and how they can be seen in nature- this inspired some Fibonacci art work.
Our NSPCC Number Day has certainly demonstrated the importance of maths and its cross-curricular application.
